This year’s Whitetail Photo Contest brought NorthernIslander some very interesting entries, including this 1970 photo sent in by Al Biltz, which earned him honorable mention in the 2012 contest.
Biltz (on left) and his son Bill (on right). The deer were atop Biltz’s 1969 Chevelle Super Sport and the photo was featured in a news story in Elyria, Ohio.
Blitz said he and six friends were on their first trip to Garden in ‘70, traveling there after hearing about the hunting from former DNR officer Bill Wagner. Blitz also believes it was Donald Cole who took the hunting group over to Garden Island. The two big bruisers were taken by Blitz and his friend Craig Petrus. The deer weighed 208 and 179 pounds each (and that was after being field dressed and hanging for nearly a week).
Ed Wojan took first place in this year’s whitetail photo contest and 2nd place went to Tom Bliss. Both their photos are featured in the January issue of NorthernIslander, on news stands now.
