On April 28, at the annual awards banquet held at the Shamrock, Chamber of Commerce President, Rachel Teague, announced that Kathy Speck was this year’s recipient of Beaver Island’s Citizen of the Year Award. Kathy was presented with a special framed plaque and a Special Tribute signed by State legislators.
The many letters received nominating Kathy for the Beaver Island Citizen of the Year award noted that for the past 35 years her love of the Island has translated into her dedicating herself in a variety of ways which benefit Islanders and visitors alike.
Her love of music has been shared through her leadership as the Director of the Community Choir and musical events such as the Christmas Cantata, Thanksgiving services and AMVETS ceremonies. Her work as a leader at the Christian Church was noted in the nomination letters, as well as her love for the Island students and her support of its Sports Boosters events, such as the Chinese Dinners made possible by “Chef Kathy.”
Her work in promoting the Island and welcoming newcomers goes back years, and for the past 10 years she served as the President of Chamber of Commerce Board.
